Commissioning

Commissioning marks the end of an Air Force ROTC cadet’s career–it is the transition from cadet to officer. During the year prior to commissioning, cadets compete for active-duty positions in their desired Air Force career fields. Each occupation in the Air Force is given an “Air Force Specialty Code” (AFSC) to identify what career they will hold; both officers and enlisted members are designated by their AFSC. Cadets who wish to compete for a rated position (pilot, navigator, or air battle manager) must apply the year before commissioning. More competitive cadets have a higher chance of receiving their desired AFSC. However, AFSCs are ultimately decided by the needs of the Air Force.
